Job Description
We are seeking a Certified Paralegal with an Unlawful Detainer Certificate and experience in divorce and family law to join our busy legal document preparation office. This role involves working directly with clients to prepare accurate and compliant legal documents for unlawful detainer (eviction), divorce, and a variety of family law matters. The ideal candidate will be well-versed in California legal procedures, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a non-attorney legal services environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and file unlawful detainer documents, including 3-Day/30-Day/60-Day notices, complaints, and default judgments.
- Assist clients with divorce filings (Petitions, Responses, Disclosures, and Judgments) and family law matters including child custody, visitation, support, and modifications.
- Ensure accuracy, compliance, and timely preparation of all legal forms.
- Provide clients with clear, professional guidance on procedural steps (without giving legal advice).
- Maintain detailed and organized case files and calendars for court deadlines.
- Communicate with clients via phone, email, and in person regarding case updates and document needs.
- Utilize court e-filing systems and keep up to date on procedural rules and form requirements.
- Maintain confidentiality and operate within the ethical limits of a legal document assistant (LDA).
Qualifications:
- Certified Paralegal (Compliant with California Business & Professions Code §6450).
- Valid Unlawful Detainer Certificate.
- At least 2 years of experience in unlawful detainers and family law document preparation.
- Deep knowledge of California landlord-tenant law and family law processes.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Highly organized and able to manage multiple deadlines.
- Comfortable working independently and with minimal supervision.
Preferred Skills:
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred.
- LDA registration (Legal Document Assistant) is a plus.
- Prior experience in a self-help legal center or legal document preparation business.
- Familiarity with court systems and online filing platforms.
