Job Responsibilities
This position is located at the SC Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) – Office of Mental Health, Santee-Wateree Mental Health Center, Camden facility, 2611 Liberty Hill Road, Camden, SC 29020.
The Office of Mental Health’s mission is to support the recovery of people with mental illnesses. We provide a complete array of medical and support services for children, adults, and families throughout South Carolina.
Under limited supervision the Nurse Practitioner, non-institutional will provide excellent client care in an environment that is respectful of others, adaptive to change, and accountable for outcomes and in collaboration with physicians, nurses, case managers and other mental health professionals. Establish a plan of care for clients based on medical and nursing standards, outcome criteria and comprehensive assessment of client/family needs. Use expert clinical judgment and decision-making skill to predict potential client responses and to manage client through an episode of illness. May provide individual therapy for select clients based on credentials. Prescribe meds as authorized.
Responsibilities for the Nurse Practitioner, non-institutional include:
- Direct Clinical Care: Provide comprehensive psychiatric, psychopharmacological & risk assessment/management for clients of all ages (according to educational credentials) & all clinical presentations across the continuum. Collaborate with physician supervisor to establish protocols & to supervise practices pertinent to psychiatric diagnosis, pharmacologic management, and any other treatment. You must be trained in and available to provide tele-psych services to clients as needed for other Center locations.
- Child and Adolescent Care: Manage the psychiatric and mental health treatment of children and adolescents. Collaborate with the child psychiatrist in the pharmacologic management of ADHD and other childhood illnesses. Collaborate with child and adolescent services in the coordination of care among various agencies, including schools, DSS and other agencies involved.
- Productivity: Meet productivity requirement as outlined by Center Administration. 65% of available time is spent on the provision of direct clinical services.
- Safety: Provide individualized goal directed interventions that are safe and effective to clients of all ages (as credentialed) & clinical presentations utilizing nursing practice standards and in collaboration with other members of the health care team to achieve identified outcomes.
- Compliance: Consistently adhere to Corporate Compliance and other policies and procedures and the Code of Conduct of the organization. Demonstrate compliance with relevant safety, accreditation, and other regulatory requirements.
- Staff Development: Maintain current and up-to-date knowledge and skills related to client treatment. Assume personal responsibility for professional development and annual requirements of the position.
- Travel throughout the Santee-Wateree MHC catchment area as directed. Provide nursing services in the absence of a clinic nurse. Provide medical and prescriptive services in the absence of a psychiatrist within the limitations of education and licensure. Increase caseload by picking up clients not seen by the doctor.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
Graduation from an accreditation school of nursing. Licensed as an RN and hold official recognition as a Nurse Practitioner from the S.C. Board of Nursing (with prescriptive authority in SC.)
Additional Requirements:
- Ability to operate non-adaptive vehicles.
- Ability to lift up to 50lbs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.
- Health care or related experience.
- Knowledge of nursing procedures, personal hygiene, basic health and safety practices, basic human anatomy.

Be able to incorporate explanations and health education into the care of assigned patients and their families.
Have knowledge of community resources to assist in discharge planning and referral for chronic care.
Be able to interpret laboratory findings, ability to design and conduct nursing research, utilize an extensive understanding of the research process.
Complete MAPS training. Ability to travel throughout the Santee-Wateree MHC catchment area as directed.
Position is considered essential and may be called back during crises/disasters/emergencies.
